COSMOS Administrative Staff

John Moore
Director |
Dr. Moore is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at UNC. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Zoology at the University of California at Santa Barbara, his Masters of Science degree in Zoology at Michigan State University, a Masters of Science degree in Statistics and his Doctorate degree in Zoology at Colorado State University. Dr. Moore has been involved with Upward Bound since 1985 as a science instructor and now is Director. Dr. Moore is the director of the MAST Institute. |
| Ms. Chiquito earned her Bachelor's degree in Youth Leadership from Brigham Young University and her Master's degree in Education from Harvard University. She has worked as a counselor in the Boston public schools (grades 6-8) and has directed the Native American Mentoring Enterprises and Upward Bound program at the College of Eastern Utah-San Juan Campus. As assistant director of COSMOS, she oversees the daily aspects of the program which include the academic year visits to schools, recruitment and retention of the students, communication with various colleges and universities, and the afternoon sessions in the summer. |

Ann Ratcliffe

Ms Ratcliffe holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Randoph-Macon Woman's College and a Master of Arts in Teaching (with an emphasis in physics) from Duke University. She taught chemistry in high school for many years, including four years at the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon, and she has taught physics at Aims Community College. Before coming to COSMOS, she was Project Manager for ChemQuest, a high school chemistry curriculum project in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UNC. She is the author of two books used in college chemistry, and in her free time she is writing a series of science mystery novels for middle school girls. She enjoys growing vegetables and herbs in her garden. |

Elaine Romero

Richard Jurin

Dr. Jurin is an assistant professor in Biological Sciences and is also the Program Director for the Environmental Studies Program at UNC. He has an educational background in science, engineering processes, chemistry, biology, and biochemistry. He is a chartered biologist and Member of the Institute of Biology (M.S. equivalent) in London, England. He has an additional Master's degree in environmental communications, and a Doctorate in environmental education, communication, and interpretation, with an adult/community education minor, from The Ohio State University. He has conducted research in wide areas of biochemistry and taught in laboratories in universities and medical schools in England and the United States. His research now focuses on understanding worldviews and how they can be barriers to successful enviromental education. |
| Ms. Angie Diaz is a graduate of the COSMOS program and is currently pursuing a major in Social Science with a minor in Mexican American Studies. She has been employed with COSMOS for the past three years as a Resident Assistant and currently, is the Student Assistant. She has also been involved with other TRIO programs like the Greeley Dream Team and Student Support Services. Ms Diaz's personal experiences as a first generation and low-income student assist her in relating to the students. |
