Upward Bound Math and Science Program (COSMOS) June Employment Opportunities, June 14-July 31,2004

Instructors

Instructors are needed in science, math, and English. Instructors must hold at least a B.A. in their field. A Master's degree and/or Colorado licensure plus two to three years teaching experience is preferred. Instructors must be able to work as members of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team that will integrate all instructional areas using a constructivist pedagogy. Applicants should have an interest in diversity issues and in mentoring first generation, low income high school students.

Responsibilities include

  • attending preservice training the week of June 14;
  • assisting with development of an integrated, hands-on curriculum;
  • participating in orientation and staff meetings;
  • teaching in classrooms, computer labs, and on field-trips, 5 days/week for 6 weeks;
  • tutoring;
  • participating in all half-day and overnight weekend field trips ;
  • transporting students in University vehicles as needed.

Stipend dependent on experience (starting at $3,000).

Residence Life Staff

The Residence Life Staff should be

  • undergraduate or graduate students;
  • trained in residence life supervision or a related area;
  • interested in mentoring low income, first generation high school students.

Qualified candidates must have lived in a college or university residence hall and be willing to live in a residence hall during the 6-week COSMOS summer session. They must have completed at least 50 credit hours with a 2.7 or higher cumulative GPA, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and be sensitive to the challenges experienced by low income and first generation students in higher education, especially in math and science areas.

Responsibilities: The Residence Life Staff must attend preservice training the week of June 14.

Other responsibilities include:

  • supervising students in the residence hall;
  • tutoring;
  • coordinating recreational and family group activities;
  • driving for and participating in two overnight field trips ;
  • transporting students in University vehicles to and from their home schools;
  • assisting with other activities as needed.

Normal working hours each week of the six-week program are from 3:00 pm on Sunday through closure activities Friday afternoon. One weekend camping trip is required.

Minimum stipend is $2,000 plus room and board. (Dates of employment and stipend may be increased if candidate is able to obtain a 40-hour summer work study award . Application for summer work study must be in the Student Employment office by March 1 .)
