Student Stipend Assignments (August 2003-May 2004)

The assignments from August-May are due postmarked or emailed by the last Monday of the month. Stipend payment will occur in the middle of the following month.

The assignments for the months of October, February and April require you to submit examples of your work (one each from math, science and English) with one paragraph that completes the following statement: "I selected this __________ for my assignment because...". The assignments will be collected at the school visits and will be returned the following month. All assignments should be typed in 12 font.

August

Short essay discussing two or three ways you grew/changed as a result of your participation in the program this summer

September

All Students:

  • Submit one copy of Fall semester or first trimester classes
  • Submit one copy of grades or a transcript that reflects the last semester/trimester from the 2002-2003 school year

Seniors:

  • Provide a list of five potential schools, request/obtain applications

October

All Students:

  • Submit three assignments (one from each area: math, science and English) with a paragraph explaining why you selected the assignment

November

All Students:

  • Attend Field Trip on Nov. 8th
  • Submit a rough draft of resume

Seniors:

  • Attend College Planning Retreat on Nov. 15th

December

All Students:

  • Complete a reapplication form for Summer 2004

Seniors:

  • Submit one application to a college/university; submit a copy to COSMOS from one application

January

All Students:

  • Submit one copy of Fall semester/trimester grades
  • Submit one copy of Spring classes
  • Help with recruiting

February

All Students:

  • Attend Field Trip (one day)
  • Submit three assignments (one from each area: math, science and English) with a paragraph explaining why you selected the assignment

Seniors:

  • Mail off FAFSA and send COSMOS a copy of FAFSA

March

All Students:

  • Hand in corrected resumes
  • WEB assignment: Look up one possible career on the Web. Copy the URL and submit a one page summary of what you learned about the career.
  • Begin planning for classes for next year
  • Begin reviewing requirements for various colleges/universities

April

All Students:

  • Submit three assignments (one from each area: math, science and English) with a paragraph explaining why you selected the assignment

Seniors:

  • Attend overnight weekend retreat (first weekend in April)

May

All Students:

  • Attend orientation (first Saturday in May)

Mentored Students:

  • Complete UNC admissions application; submit a transcript (we can use the one submitted with the February assignment)
