Summer Program

The COSMOS summer program is designed to develop the academic, personal, and social character of each student.

  1. The Curricular Component is designed to improve math and science conceptual understanding by focusing on the integration of mathematics and science through hands-on collaborative learning experiences. The curricular strand is enriched through the use of UNC science and computer labs as well as field trips. The curriculum this year includes CHAOS and SPA. The curriculum of the CHAOS strand focuses on the topics of population dynamics, epidemic and invasion models, and chaos theory. SPA is Sports Physics and Algebra that includes pre-calculus. As a complement to science and math, the English class focuses on developing and refining skills in scientific writing. Students demonstrate their learning through a PowerPoint presentation at the end of the summer program.

  2. The Social Component is designed to improve the social skills, self-esteem, and cultural awareness of participants so they are ready to succeed in the collegiate community. These skills are developed through academic, recreational, and cultural activities.

  3. The Mentored Student Component is composed of successful students who have completed their junior year in high school and have been past participants in the program have the opportunity to apply to participate in a research project at UNC with a professor and graduate students. The selected students conduct research separately from the other students and receive UNC credit. This component is funded through outside sources such as the National Science Foundation, National Park Service, and the Xcel Foundation.

  4. High School Credits are granted after course grades are considered and submitted to each student's home school at the end of the summer session. All cooperating target schools grant varying amounts of academic credit to students receiving grades of C or better.

Upward Bound Math and Science is a program.
