Managing a Kit-Based Science System, Using Science Journals: Practical Applications

Penny Eucker

Science notebooks is the best way to increase science inquiry by tapping into the comfort zone (literacy) of K-5 teachers. School District Adams 12 staff members have mapped out a way to differentiate science notebook training for our 32 elementary schools based upon previous staff training and % proficient at the 5th grade science CSAP. We will share our roadmap. We have worked closely with ELL and SPED to improve our delivery of best practice for all students. Our presentation will be adapted to time and interest of our group- about 30-45 minutes. We will take a 10 minute walking field trip to our kit distribution center located in the same building. We looked at many kit distribution centers in Colorado and built upon the best parts of each center. We have over 500 kits that circulate several times each year to our 1200 elementary teachers. We could also talk about the science writing project for middle school that will be launched next year.

We would like to open up some time for others to talk about science notebooks at their location- or perhaps a panel to field questions about the major strands of science notebooks.

A light breakfast will be provided and CPO Science (Jessie Herman) will host lunch and a 30 minute discussion of their science materials. We use CPO/ physical science at 8th grade and it is a fabulous program. Ward's Scientific will also talk for 5 minutes on their custom science kits.

Tentative schedule:
8:30-9:00 coffee and social
9:00-9:15  Introductions
9:15- 9:45 Science notebooks
9:45- 10:00 break
10:00- 10:15 science kit distribution
10:15-10:20- Toby/ Ward's
10:20- 11:00- Science notebooks around Colorado- issues, challenges, what works
11:00- 11:30 announcements
11:30     CPO/ lunch

Directions
We are located at 1500 East 128th Ave in Thornton. If you exit from I-25 at 120 th Avenue- head east. Turn left at Washington St- about 1 mile. Go another mile or so and turn right on 128th. Go past the traffic light and turn right into the Adams 12 complex. We are booked in Pinon Pine room but that could change. For the purpose of breakfast and lunch count, please RSVP to Penny - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
