June 5 - July 28

MET 595, Meteorology for Educators, on line, Instructor: Gary Huffines, 3 credits. This course is designed for those who have a background in some form of science and uses many exercises that can be adapted in the middle-school or high-school science programs. The goal is an understanding of the atmosphere and to be able to make basic forecasts of the weather using information available through the internet. Math is limited to algebra, more time is spent with hands-on exercises than in developing theories and equations. This is part of 2007-08 COURSES OFFERING FOR UNC'S MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP AND THE M.A. IN NATURAL SCIENCES. Geometry in Middle Level Mathematics Teaching (MFT 514, 3 Sem hrs) 8:30-4:30
Brief Description: This course focuses on geometry concepts from the middle grades curriculum. We'll explore measurement (perimeter, area, volume, and the use of non-standard units), transformational geometry with applications to symmetry, 3-dimensional geometry, the role of definitions and proofs, analysis of 2- and 3-dimensional geometric shapes, and the interplay between geometry and both algebra and arithmetic, and more.
These courses are part of a Master's program in Middle Level Mathematics Teaching and are supported by Northern Colorado High Plains Mathematics and Science Partnership for Teachers and Students which provides tuition support for eligible teachers. BIO 508 Microbial Explorations for Elementary Teachers, Instructor: Teresa Higgins.3 credits, cost $540. June 28-30 (UNC campus) and July 1-14 (on line)
This course is designed to build the participants content knowledge in microbiology as well as identify appropriate microbiology topics and activities that can be used in K-6 classrooms. This course will imbed the American Society of Microbiology core themes and concepts. GLOBE Watershed Dynamics Project Summer Workshop
MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHERS: ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AN EXCITING NEW WAY TO TEACH EARTH SCIENCE THROUGH INVESTIGATIONS OF YOUR WATERSHED? IF SO, PLEASE JOIN US FOR this 3-DAY WORKSHOP. GLOBE and The Geographic Data in Education (GEODE) Initiative at Northwestern University are looking for middle school and high school science teachers to participate in an exciting earth system science education project that connects students with real scientific data sets. Notification of selection sent by May 21. Required Teacher Commitment: Implement the in-class curriculum in Fall Semester 2007. Administer content-specific assessments at project beginning and completion of the curriculum. Provide your feedback and suggestions to the development team. Materials, a 1-year, 30-seat license for My World GIST software, and more are provided. With required commitment, a $300 stipend provided at end of project. ESCI 584 Volcanism of the Pacific Northwest Summer Course Offering, with Instructor: Dr. Libby Prueher. Credits: 2, through UNC Extended Studies. An 8 day field trip to the Pacific Northwest to study volcanism and tectonics along an active plate margin. Students will research the stops before we leave.
Planned stops include: Yellowstone NP, Mt Hood Mt Mazama ( Crater Lake ), Diamond Craters, and Steens Mountain,OR.
Tuition: graduate tuition $180/credit hour Transportation: (depends on number of students) Cost (approx): $600.00 plus food and camping fees. Summer Master's Tuition Scholarships may be available for summer students. Contact Dr. Prueher for the application, Libby.Prueher@unco.edu
