Questions Page, Spring 2006

- I'm looking for 3rd -grade level information on food chains and decomposers?
See: McMillan/McGraw-Hill's Relationships of Living Things - 3 rd Grade

-What can you suggest for studying motion at the middle school level?
Look at Science Alive -Motion

- We're just starting on Geometry for 4 th grade, where can we find some activities?
Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley's Math includes working with triangles, congruent figures, lines and line segments for some interesting work.

- I need to look into science inquiry- where do I go?
See the Science Inquiry Model with standards-based classroom tasks, scoring guide for assessment of students, performance of traits of inquiry, and intensive professional development component ( Northwest Regional Education Lab at www.nwrel.org/msec/science_inq/ )

-Where can I find a Geoboard to work with in making shapes?
Visit UNC's Mathematics Department, they will help you in finding a Geoboard (Avis Werdel).

- Is there a video on the water cycle?
The Hotline has a video, Water Cycle, from Science Court (elementary grade level).

-What's the reason that rubbing alcohol evaporates so quickly? - also, why doesn't it freeze in the freezer?
Due to the carbon atoms in rubbing alcohol, the bonds between the molecules are not as closely bound as they are in water; there's more bonding by hydrogen atoms in water. Rubbing alcohol doesn't freeze in the freezer because of the relatively fewer hydrogen atoms in the alcohol.

-Can you suggest some resources for middle school using discussion/directions for finding slope on a graph that are utilized and addressed?
See Mathematics in Middle School , Aug. '05 and Connected Mathematics 'Looking for Pythagoras, Geometry'.

-Do you have elementary level mathematics materials that addresses basic learning disabilities?
See Mathematics & Science Classrooms: Building a Community of Learners
