Fast Plants
My students are fascinated to learn that plants use sexual reproduction. That plants can be male, female or both. I had my students find the mass of a bean seed. We then planted seeds in the light and seeds in the dark. Students measured the growth of each plant in cm. What is amazing is that the seeds in the dark will grow faster and taller- until the stored up food source in the seed is used up. Also they can make observations of the differences in plant groups. They can see if seed size has a correlation to plant height (dark group). You also can get radish seeds that have been exposed to radiation. Grow regular radishes and mutant radishes and do observations. Kids love radiation and mutants. I grew plants on an old record player and kids made observations of the plants when they grew exposed to forces. You can also grow beans in a Petri dish and rotate it every day to see what happens to the roots and stem. |
