Helplines and Authoritative Resources (alphabetical listing)

Amazing World of Birds: Acomprehensive site that will tell you and teach you nearly anything you've wanted to know about birds. (all)

The Animal Diversity Web: This page is sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology.
Ask a Plant & Pest Expert: From the Virtual Plant and Pest Diagnostic Laboratory @ Purdue University. This site concerns plants and how organisms interact with them. You have the option of asking a question or searching the archive of old questions and answers. (All)
Awesome Library: This site has great information in a variety of life sciences.
Biomass Energy Reference Site: Many links to all aspects of biomass power use as in gasifers, pyrolysis, digestion and effect of exploitation of biomass power on the environment.
Colorado Agricultural Statistics Service: This site provides information on Colorado's agriculture.

Fast Plants
My students are fascinated to learn that plants use sexual reproduction. That plants can be male, female or both.  I had my students find the mass of a bean seed.  We then planted seeds in the light and seeds in the dark.  Students measured the growth of each plant in cm.  What is amazing is that the seeds in the dark will grow faster and taller- until the stored up food source in the seed is used up.  Also they can make observations of the differences in plant groups.  They can see if seed size has a correlation to plant height (dark group). You also can get radish seeds that have been exposed to radiation.  Grow regular radishes and mutant radishes and do observations.  Kids love radiation and mutants. I grew plants on an old record player and kids made observations of the plants when they grew exposed to forces.  You can also grow beans in a Petri dish and rotate it every day to see what happens to the roots and stem.

The Insects Home Page: One of the most comprehensive sites on the Internet.  Insects are categorized according to orders, classifications, lists of attributes, or statistics about particular insects. (All)
Introduction to the Aranae: This site offers good and concise information about these "true" spiders. (All)
Missouri Botanical Garden: If you want to know something about nearly any plant, then this is the site.  Plants are categorized according to region of the world.  Each plant and plant type contains a brief biography including some history of the plant itself.  There are links provided to other sites concerning botany. (All)
Rain Forest Teaching Curriculum: Using the tropical rainforests as backdrops for teaching natural history, ecology, biology, physics and chemistry.
Sustainable Energy Coalition: Resources related to all aspects of renewable energy including policy, utility restructuring, pollution prevention, climate change and tax policies.
The National Resource Center for Cephalopods: This page provides resources for the study of such creatures as the octopus and varieties of squid. (All)
USGS Species Identification Guide: This detailed site offers descriptions and pictures of several amphibians.  Links to additional resources and guides are provided. (All)
USGS Western Ecological Research Center: This page provides habitat, telemetry, and other geologic information about the western United States. (All)
