State of Colorado Science Safety Requirements for Schools

Rules and Regulations Governing Schools in Colorado. This is published by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Chapter 8 is written for lab sciences, along with the Prohibited and Restricted Chemicals lists in the Appendix. To read this file, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader. Rules and regs-schools CO.pdf

Your school can expect a visit sometime from an inspector from CDPHE or your county's Public Health and Environment office, a branch of CDPHE. The inspectors use a field guide based upon Rules and Regulations Governing Schools in the State of Colorado. To know what inspectors are looking for, download a copy of the School Laboratory and Vocational Area Inspector's Field Guidebook.

The following documents supplement Rules and Regulations Governing Schools in the State of Colorado. You should have copies for your Safety Manual.

Some Other Resources

Science Safety Handbook for California Public Schools. This is one of the best school science handbooks I have found. csmp.ucop.edu/csp/downloads/safety.pdf

Science and Safety: Making the Connection. The Council of State Science Supervisors has an excellent small handbook called "Science and Safety: Making the Connection" that you can download at csss.enc.org/safety.htm

Chemical Safety for Teachers and Their Supervisors, Grades 7 - 12. This booklet, published by the American Chemical Society, is available free (one copy) by calling 800-227-5558. But you can download the pdf file. Note the importance of getting your administration involved in science safety issues! membership.acs.org/c/ccs/pub_1.htm
