UNC's Nanotechnology in Undergraduate Education (NUE): Project DUNES

Developing Undergraduate Nanoscale Experiences for the Sciences

In the Fall of 2006, UNC was awarded a NSF grant to implement interdisciplinary learning communities focused on nanotechnology, to develop modules for undergraduate classrooms and laboratories, and to provide stimulating lecutres from outside nanoscience researchers.

Goals of Project

  • Enhance undergraduates' ability to visualize and understand nanoscale science concepts while giving them hands-on experiences related to nanotechnology
  • Prepare undergraduates to enter the workforce or to enter graduate studies in nanoscale science
  • Educating future K-12 teachers about nanoscale science and the societal issues arising from this emerging technology while developing their teaching skills
  • Allow students to have significant interdisciplinary peer interactions to nurture an appreciation for the cross disciplinary nature of nanotechnology.
