NSTA Adopts New Position Statement: Principles of Professionalism for Science Educators
In a newly revised position statement, Principles of Professionalism for Science Educators, NSTA establishes expectations and principles to guide the professional conduct of all preK–16 teachers of science. The statement emphasizes the need for science educators to “uphold the highest ethical standards of the profession to earn the respect, trust, and confidence of students, parents, school leadership, colleagues, and other members of the community.” 
NSTA would like to thank the members of the position statement panel who worked over several months to develop this statement, as well as the NSTA members who provided feedback during its development. Early Science Studies Generate Student Payoff
A recent report urges science educators to encourage their elementary and high school students to engage in hands-on activities as they learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Researchers concluded that such students, when they enter two- or four year colleges, will likely take part in hands-on research and pursue advanced degrees in the STEM disciplines. The National Science Foundation underwrote a series of surveys to determine undergraduates’ interest and experience. Students reported that their experiences in performing actual research projects not only produced positive learning but also stimulated their desire to pursue graduate work.

VCR Alert—Danger: Poisoned Food Airing July 2, Special Classroom Materials Available for Teachers
CNN is airing a food safety piece for teachers on Monday, July 2, 2007, from 4 to 5 a.m. through CNN Student News’ Special Investigations Unit.
In the show, entitled Danger: Poisoned Food, CNN's chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta investigates current threats to the nation's food supply; the investigation goes all the way from the fields and farms to the packaging plants to the grocery store shelves. Gupta also shows that the U.S. government's approach to these dangers may be putting Americans at additional risk.

This commercial-free show can be used as a classroom resource in grades 7–12 and includes corresponding discussion questions and activities that will challenge students to:

Learn about factors that currently pose a threat to the safety of the U.S. food supply;
Examine causes and symptoms of common food-borne illnesses; and 
Identify ways to prevent and treat different food-borne diseases.
