Full Day Workshops: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

- Promise of the Wild: The World of Nature Myth - Presented by Keynote
Speaker and Award-Winning Author Gary Ferguson
This workshop will offer environmental educators a chance to learn how
nature myth can bring exciting new perspectives to their favorite
outdoor education activities. Beginning with a body of enchanting
stories collected from around the world, we'll explore how such tales
can be used to enliven a variety of scientific and philosophical themes.

 - Got GIS? Using Data Collection and Mapping Technology - Presented by
a team of technology experts and teachers
Geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and satellite imagery are now
helpful tools in the outdoor classroom and lab. They offer a powerful
opportunity for teachers to integrate map-based problem solving using
GIS software, field sensors, and web resources with students to collect
and use data. Collect data with GPS receivers, field sensors, and Texas
Instruments probe-ware, and use the data to build GIS maps with ArcView
and on-line mapping programs. Use GIS to improve critical thinking,
analysis, and decision-making skills. Explore on-line resources and
other web-based tools, integrate data-collection technology and explore
hands-on activities.

Half Day Workshops: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

 - Making a Difference: Sustainability as a Framework for Environmental
Education - Presented by Dan Chiras, Ph.D., Visiting Professor of
Environmental Science at Colorado College
To have a lasting impact on students and society, environmental
education must encourage new ways of thinking about environmental issues
using an approach that focuses on root causes, root-level solutions, and
sustainability using language that supports broad social and economic
goals.

 - Environmental Art as Environmental Education - Presented by Lynne
Hull, environmental artist
This workshop will start with a brief survey of contemporary artists in
eco-art, and then cover practical ways you can adapt their ideas to
working with a variety of audiences. Weather permitting, you will go
outdoors and try some of the ideas presented. This might include
creating an artwork of natural materials found onsite in the style of
Andy Goldsworthy, taking a walk in the style of Richard Long, and
sharing interesting points in the landscape in the style of Nancy Holt.
Lynne Hull will talk about her habitat artworks, examine "nature's
geometry" in contrast to human geometry, and build natural habitat
shelters which you can create at your own facility or schoolyard.
