Dear educators,
I wanted to send you one more email, mentioning some courses & other
opportunities coming up this summer--before you all pack up and go home
for the season. I know that some school districts finish up this week
already (some even, today), and some go for another week or two.
I hope you all have a great summer!
Sincerely, Pete
First I'll put in a plug for a couple of my own classes through CSM
Teacher Enhancement:
Rocks and Minerals is a two-day, 1 credit hour class about the basics of
rocks and minerals and how to teach about them, emphasizing a lot of
hands-on activities, examining, and testing specimens. It's CSM class
CT-9666-07D, June 20-21, tuition fee $75.
Walking Tour of Building Stones in Denver precedes the above by one day; a
one day, 1/2 credit hour class led by Jane Dianich and Pete Modreski, a
stroll around downtown Denver examining what rocks were used as building
stones, and including a field guide aimed at a tour for school classes.
CSM class CT-04131-07D, June 19, tuition fee $60. It's a fun and
interesting trip.
Dinosaur Ridge Teachers' Workshop is a two-day, 1 credit hour class to
see, learn about, and do some activities about the dinosaur bones and
other fossils found at Dinosaur Ridge near Morrison; led by Norb Cygan &
Pete Modreski. CSM class CT-9206-07M, July 9-10, tuition fee $100.
It may or may not be getting too late to register for it, but I know that
the Total Concept of the Mining Industry: All About Mining class still has
openings. CSM class CT-5700-07M, 6 credit hours, June 11-July 6, tuition
fee $200. A combination of lectures, field trips, lab and plant visits,
and all in all this is a very interesting and stimulating class; quite an
experience. Go to its description on the CSM website,
http://www.mines.edu/Outreach/Cont_Ed/total.htm
where there's a link to the website giving a full description, photos,
etc., about the unique class.
Descriptions of all the CSM Teacher Enhancement Classes can be viewed
online at http://www.mines.edu/Outreach/Cont_Ed/teacher.shtml
or call 303-273-3303.
** Not a for-credit class, but last summer we led a teacher workshop to
visit the "Rock Room" at the USGS Drill Core Research Center for teachers
to gather free rock & mineral samples to use in class, followed by a field
trip to visit one or more interesting field sights where we can see, and
collect more samples, of Colorado rocks and minerals. I would like to do
this one day again this summer, but have not yet set any specific date;
probably, some time in mid-July. I'll be sending out word about this in
a future email. If you are interested, and especially if you will not be
reachable through your school district email address, please write or call
me, and I will know to keep you informed about when we will do this.
The 20007 Colorado Ground Water Institute Program, a two-day class for
teachers, held in 8 cities throughout the US, "is an innovative two-day
training program to help educators increase their understanding of ground
water science and water resource issues". The Colorado session will be
held at the USGS offices on the Denver Federal Center, July 10-11. The
attendance fee is only $25 (refunded upon completion of the class). For
more info, I am going to forward a second email with attachments giving a
complete description of the class; or, you may contact for further
details,

Colorado River Watch "is a statewide volunteer water quality-monitoring
program operated by the non profit 501(c)3 Colorado Watershed Network in
cooperation with the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Our mission is to work
with voluntary stewards to monitor water quality and other indicators of
watershed health, and utilize this high quality data to educate citizens
and inform decision makers about the condition of Colorado?s waters." To
have your school or organization participate, you can attend either of two
training sessions to be held this summer or fall, Aug. 1-3 in Pueblo CO or
Sep. 23-25 in Pingree Park, Larimer Co. CO. The fee for new groups to
become part of the River Watch program is a one time cost of $300. With
this fee, groups will obtain over $1200 worth of water quality equipment
and covers one person?s attendance to a training of your choice. River
Watch will be holding two trainings this fall. The first will be held in
Pueblo*. A second will be held at Pingree Park, a Colorado State
University field station in the Poudre River Valley, 45 min north of Fort
Collins. Students are welcome to attend either training if accompanied by
an adult. Continuing education credits (up to 4) will be available from
the Colorado School of Mines at an additional cost.
"If you are interested in attending these trainings or learning more about
our program, please contact River Watch Program Coordinator Curtis
Hartenstine at curtis.hartenstine at state.co.us or at (303) 291-7412. "
* August 1-3 we will be in Pueblo. The first 2 days will focus on water
quality sampling and analysis and the nuts and bolts of River Watch. The
third day of the training and covers macroinvertebrate sampling and
physical habitat analysis. There will be a cost of $60per person to
attend. Lodging and evening meals will be the responsibility of the
participant. The deadline to register for this event is July 8th.
