Richard Louv, an internationally-known author and speaker, has captured the
nation's attention with his book, "The Last Child in the Woods". He is not
alone in his belief that today's youth suffer from what he terms "nature
deficit disorder". Many agencies, organizations and individuals have also
developed initiatives to foster getting children outside. The realization
that children are no longer experiencing the benefits of outdoor activity is
recognized as being detrimental to their physical and mental growth and
development, and as a primary determinant of their longevity and quality of
life.

The weekend of October 3-5, there will be activities to increase public
awareness of the importance of nature and outside activity in the growth and
development of our children.

This weekend is sponsored by the Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds,
National Park Service Intermountain Region, Florissant Fossil Beds National
Monument, Catamount Institute, Colorado College, Colorado State Parks, Pikes
Peak Chapter of the Sierra Club, American Camp Association, Teller County
Public Health, Sanborn Western Camps, and School in the Woods (D20).
