Technology Literacy CenterCoordinated by MAST at the University of Northern Colorado, the program is funded by the U S WEST/Qwest endowment, QWEST Advancement of Technology Literacy. To date we have developed many UNC courses for undergraduate students and K-12 educators. These courses introduce a variety of technologies and their potential use as tools in UNC course work and K-12 classroom activities. We also have developed distance learning courses and communities on UNC's Blackboard system. We provide technical assistance to externally funded mathematics and science education programs such as the Center for Learning and Teaching in the West and the GK-12 program. We also continue to take Internet and other technology instruction to interested communities. We call these our TLC classes. [History] Where can we teach? Experienced TLC technology instructors (bios) from the University of Northern Colorado remain available to travel with multimedia laptop computers for individual use and provide technology education to Colorado communities. Our "interactive schools" are used to provide participants hands-on Internet and Application classes. Funding for this project has come from Qwest. Through this project over 150,000 participants in 500+ communities have experienced the Web since 1996. The instructors can offer an array of different Widening Our World (WOW) classes, including Internet classes based on the books and online materials: Introduction to the Internet, Advanced Searching, E-mail, Applications of the Internet for Educators, and Applications of the Internet for Small Businesses. Instructional manuals were developed by the TLC staff. Additional computer application classes now include Office 2000 and Office XP, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop, among others. Participants learn on laptop computers connected to the Internet through wireless, local area network. These classes can be provided virtually anywhere (schools, non-profit organization, small business organizations, community centers, chambers of commerce or any place where a hosting group can furnish a phone line or existing network, electrical power, and a classroom setting.) For more information on the research and development of the mobile LAN model, see Our Technology. Who can attend WOW classes? Everyone is encouraged to attend WOW classes. Participants typically include:
What WOW Classes are like? Classes last from one to four hours, and topics are tailored to fit the requests of participants. They include topics from basic Internet navigation to more complex subjects, such as Web page authoring and how to use different computer application programs effectively. Among questions typically covered are: "What is the Internet or World Wide Web?" With the following classes, participants receive copies of the instructional materials: When classes are held To find current information on where WOW classes are being held call us at 1.970.351.1280. |
